Hello, this is Alys, the girl behind the pocket pirate – and the girl who is the pocket pirate… for we are one and the same.

Sometimes I wonder if there need be such a distinction, between what is real and what some might say is not – but for the most part what I know is this: I am a drawer and maker of things. A craftsperson, a hoarder, an observer, a beachcomber. I appreciate subtle attention to detail. I love the silver sheen on the bay at first light, the smell of my cat’s fur when he comes in from the cold, the sound of sharp sewing scissors, and triumphantly peeling that perfect boiled egg.

I am fascinated by the potential of any given material in its endless combinations with another; how both the discordant and the compatible can be beautiful. What I can say is that all these things, in some way, combine to make what I do the way it is.

From the snug little boat I have come to call home, each day I sail out on my rusty bicycle into a sea of treasure, both the ostentatious and the ignored. We all create our sparkling worlds – and this is mine.
