I was given a lot of freedom with this commission so used the fabric swatch as a starting point to influence many of the other features of the bag. I was able to applique leather swatches into the pattern of the fabric, and follow the lines of the bold shapes with stitch to give an almost quilted effect.
I echoed the bevelled shape of the exterior leather in many of the other bag features, including the interioir pockets and strap attachments. I came across a beautiful aged leather belt in a charity shop which toned in with the rest of the bag really well. I shaped the rounded end into a leaf-point to match the other bag features, and was able to use the belt holes to rivet the strap in place for extra strength.
My client was delighted with the outcome and said:
‘What a lovely surprise came to my cottage today. A beautiful bag made for me by Alys. It’s not a mere handbag, it’s a work of art. I am thrilled with it. Great size for carrying all my stuff to work. Everything I asked for, in practical terms, and so much more in beauty for the eye.’
